In “Other-Sacrificing Options” (2020), Benjamin Lange argues that, when distributing benefits and burdens, we may discount the interests of people to whom stand in morally negative relationships relative other people. Lange’s case for partiality proceeds two steps. First, he presents a hypothetical example that commonly elicits intuitions favourable partiality. Second, invokes symmetry considerations reason from permissible positive towards intimates adversaries. this paper, I argue neither intuition elicited by nor invoked support permission This does not mean is unjustified. It means only justification, if there one, must take different form. end suggesting an alternative justification partiality, one mirrors gratitude-based justifications rather than based on intimacy.
